I am frequently asked about information and sources of free software, and my most frequent response has had something to do with Gizmo and his comprehensive Web site techsupportalert.com. Gizmo, also known as Gizmo Richards, is really Ian Richards, an Australian who has been active in the hardware and software industries for many years and has developed an enviable reputation as the senior editor of a major computer publication.

I had what some might term a very uncomfortable experience last Thursday at our local Galveston Island Walmart. My husband, Ted, is quite the shopper, and he always stays in the stores longer than I want to be there, so I usually take a book along with me and read while I wait for him. There is usually at least two or three benches near the doorways of the bigger stores and I don’t mind at all sitting, reading or chatting with a new friend I’ve met that is waiting on someone, too.

A few weeks ago, I wrote a column about an interesting spectacle I witnessed while fishing with my husband in our boat on Galveston Bay. I love watching all of God’s creatures do their thing, and I have learned so much while on the water. It is thrilling to get a bit of understanding as to how creation and creatures all work together for the common good. This education is so much more fun when one is seeing in reality what actually takes place on and in the water that literally surrounds us here on the Bolivar Peninsula.

Q. Our neighbor installed a new fence between our properties and did not tell us he was going to do it. After the fence went up, he asked us to pay half the costs. Do we legally have to pay? Does it matter that they did not consult us about the fence?

I was recently using someone’s older computer, which had IObit Security 360 installed as its anti-spyware program. As is typical, I always check and update, if necessary, the installed security software. I noticed that the IObit Security 360, a popular anti-spyware utility with millions of downloads, had not been updated for several weeks, and clicked on the button to manually update it.

For the past few years, I have been using two primary methods for recording personal medical information. One method I have been using to keep track of my personal medical information and records is an 8 gig flash drive attached to my car key chain along with a large, red, aluminum, engraved medic alert logo.

Q. I have a will that was prepared some time ago. It is not notarized. Is it still valid?

A. In Texas, a printed or form will is valid if it is signed and witnessed by two people. There is no requirement that a will be notarized. Having said that, however, there are two things in your question that suggest you might want to get a new will prepared.

On a recent trip to Georgia to visit my relatives and to take care of some pressing business, I learned a valuable lesson from my longtime sister in law, Teresa Fowler Stancil. We have been in the same family for more than 40 years and have shared much humor, some illness, hundreds of Scrabble games, lots of other good times, a few sad ones, child rearing secrets, and years of life experiences. She is quite the teacher and I have found myself gleaning tidbits from her vast table of knowledge.
