More seniors than ever are taking supplements alongside their prescribed medications, a practice that puts them at risk for dangerous drug interactions, researchers report.

More than 15 percent of older Americans took potentially life-threatening combinations of prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs and dietary supplements in 2011, the study showed. That was almost a two-fold increase from 2005, when 8.4 percent of seniors did so.

After tossing the chalk into the air, I asked, “What made the chalk fall to the floor?” I answered my own question, saying, “You think it’s gravity, but it is the little green people. They live in the air and are cleaning their homes.” I then gave a 15-minute speech on the little green people. I had one in my pocket. Part of my speech was a brief dialogue with my invisible friend, one of the little green people.

I read much of the time, and before Hurricane Ike destroyed a great deal of the Bolivar Peninsula, I had quite a personal collection of good books. Some might not seem like significant works to others, but to me, they were old and dear friends. I had used many of these books for quote sources or good illustrations in all of these years of writing.

Q. Is it against any law to negotiate rental rates? Could it be considered discrimination if a landlord charges different rates for the same size apartment?

A. Discrimination is basically treating one person better or worse than another. It is discrimination to charge different people different rent for the same apartment. Discrimination, however, is not per se illegal. In fact, it is not uncommon for a seller to charge different prices to different customers. I am sure that many people who buy the same type of car pay very different prices.

I wrote recently about some of the budgeting lessons I learned from my precious Mama Cole while I lived in her home from the time of my birth until my biological mother remarried and moved me to the Atlanta area of Georgia. Mama Cole did not believe in owing anyone and was adamant that if we could not pay cash for it, we could not have it.
