Saying it would never happen to me, I have found lately that it has. I am turning into my mother, at least when it comes to quotes, quips and proverbs. For years, I remember both my natural mother and my grandmother in whose home I lived the early years of my life having a saying that just popped out of their mouths when it seemed to be needed — and sometimes when I did not think it was. I vowed I would never burden my own children, their contemporaries, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends with all those old wives tales and quotes. I just can’t seem to help it.

While watching a television newscast with my husband in our home one night recently, I heard the phrase “the cost of freedom” used four times in the one piece. That repetition started a train of thought in my mind that I have been dealing with off and on since hearing the writer of the script’s interruption. What do we mean when we say “the cost of freedom?”

Sometime ago, I wrote about several free utilities available from Google. Google has continued to update and enhance its offerings in its attempt to maintain its dominant position on the Internet by offering dozens of free utilities for PCs, MACs, and Linux computers. The comprehensive listing of Google offerings is online at www.google.com/intl/en/options.

Beaumont has a new cozy, modern hot spot to cool your palette and express your individuality. It’s The Yogurt Spot on the corner of Phelan at Dowlen in front of Exygon and next door to Subway.

Whether you Cake “Batter Up!” for a Chocolate Craving or Tiki Torro until you turn Totally Tart, you’re going to have fun tasting these tantalizing flavors at this self-serve, pay-by-the ounce healthy dessert bar.

A regular reader of this column suggested that I write about a free service that can automatically install and update the most popular freeware programs available. She recommended Ninite, but I was also familiar with a competitive service from AllMyApps. While both have comprehensive listings of free software, AllMyApps also includes links to some commercial software applications, so I would have to give the edge to Ninite when it comes to the mass installation of free software.

For years I’ve been attracted to biographies and stories of famous women in the Bible, and to my surprise, there are quite a few. Some of them did great and mighty things and changed the course of human history.

For two weeks now, I have been studying the life of Hannah, mother of Samuel. Her story is found in 1 Samuel, and it is an interesting one.

During the course of the Mother’s Day weekend here on the Bolivar Peninsula, we met many new friends at our 26th annual Crab Festival. We also connected with many people we had met during other events, meetings following Hurricane Ike’s assault on our area, and in the course of doing business week after week. It was pleasant just to be having fun and not involved in working on one project or another.

This has been a very busy week for me, and not just with the final exams I am typing and the papers that I am grading for the end of the semester. I have been inundated with requests for help in removing what is known generically as “rogue anti-virus.” These recent frantic requests for assistance have been from a prominent an attorney, a politician, a small business owner, fellow faculty members, students, neighbors, and a panoply of other people, all of whom had inadvertently downloaded one (or two!) of the hundreds of variations of the same malware under a variety of names.

This week we celebrate one of my favorite days of the year — Mother’s Day.

In last week’s column, we began a discussion about unjust criticism and how it affects those on the receiving end of the matter. We listed six good points out of the dozen originally written on the subject. Today, we are going to cover the last half a dozen, trusting that they will help many who are facing this type of situation on a daily basis either in a relationship within the home, at school, at work, or in relationships with friends.
