Beaumont is still sweet on Honey-B Ham

For over 20 years, the Honey-B Ham Company,  off of Calder, has been serving Southeast Texans some of the best soups, salads and sandwiches for lunch. The old fashioned shop has made a name for itself for not only offering a fast meal with friendly service, but for also having premade meals ready to take home with you on a moment’s notice.

When walking into the cozy establishment, smiling faces greet you at the counter to take your order, or answer any of your questions. Homemade brownies, cookies or cakes can also be found beside the register most days, to remind you of that late afternoon snack you will be craving. When it comes to décor, the company keeps it simple. Patrons can soak up the nostalgia in the establishment by glancing at a few pictures of the building from several years ago placed throughout the café, as well as a framed poster of the café’s original logo hanging on a side corridor wall. Having lunch at Honey-B Ham will take you back to a simpler time in Beaumont’s history, before all the hustle and bustle of the ever-growing city.

However you slice it, Honey-B Ham is delicious

It’s not just the ability to reminiscence while eating tasty sandwiches that makes Honey-B Ham special. They are more than just a sandwich shop; they cater to those who are in a bind with a quick meal fix.

From prepackaged soup fixings in a bag to whole hams and turkeys, they always have something on hand. Gumbo and chicken tortilla soup are also in quart-sized containers ready to go. Ham, turkey and cheese party trays are available to order as well as savory gift baskets. Don’t forget about the whole or sliced turkey and ham!

Even though the café is usually open for Monday through Saturday, from Dec.15-24, they will not be offering lunch. However, they will sell gumbo to go from 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. The hours for the week of Christmas are as follows: Dec 22, 8-5:30; Dec. 23, 8-5:30; and Dec. 24 open 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. only.

What we ate

The Club – Ham, turkey, bacon, cheese, lettuce and tomato on wheat bread with a side of chips, this traditional sandwich is served in four sections and presented beautifully. The bread was toasted and stacked high with layers of thin, juicy turkey and ham. The gooey yellow cheese was a nice background for the stunning tomatoes and crisp lettuce. Hands down one of the best clubs around; simplicity is key to a great sandwich.

The Lite Lunch – your choice of chicken, tuna, ham or egg salad served with two tomato slices, cottage cheese and peach halves. Not knowing what to expect, we were delighted to see the meal come in a bowl on top of romaine lettuce leaves. A huge dollop of chicken salad was covered with gorgeous slices of tomato. Shimmering peach halves laid over tasty cottage cheese. Our only request? More chicken salad! This stuff was amazing and very flavorful. The Lite Lunch is a wonderful alternative to an ordinary lunch, or for those watching their waistlines this season.

Raspberry tea – One of the many fresh teas you can choose from Honey-B Ham, it wasn’t overly sweet and had a definite berry taste.
