Cheat day? Not really

Cheat day? Not really

Even though the weather is getting colder outside, it’s always a good time for some yogurt, no matter the season, because yogurt is good for you.

According to Erin Coleman, a registered and licensed dietitian and writer for, there are several health benefits to eating yogurt, especially for women.

Yogurt contains high amounts of protein, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, zinc and vitamin B-12.

“Women who eat yogurt regularly generally have a better overall diet quality than those who don’t consume yogurt,” Coleman writes.

Women who eat yogurt often have fewer chronic-disease risk factors, lower blood pressure, blood glucose and triglyceride levels.

“This means female yogurt consumers may have a lower chance of developing chronic diseases, such as heart disease and diabetes,” according to Coleman.

It also contains probiotics, which can improve digestive function as well as reduce the risk of osteoporosis. The list goes on and on, and all these healthy benefits of yogurt can be seen on the walls of Yogurt Spot, which has been a destination of yogurt lovers since it opened at 6456 Phelan Blvd. in Beaumont in 2011.

“Basically, every frozen yogurt you can get is gluten free,” said Yogurt Spot manager Sarah Thatcher. “I think we only have one flavor that isn’t. It’s easy to get no sugar added, nondairy, and nonfat flavors, so everyone can find something they want.”

To adjust for the potential downturn in the wintertime, Thatcher said the Yogurt Spot recently joined the Waitr food delivery service and is handing out more discount coupons than they normally would. Every Wednesday is College Night from 7-10 p.m., and students who show their student ID can get 20 percent off. Senior citizens 55 and older get 20 percent off 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Monday – Friday. Also, the Yogurt Spot has free Wi-Fi.

What are some trending flavors customers currently enjoy?

“The Cake Batter is the most popular. The salted caramel is really popular, too — we make that one ourselves, so a lot of people really like that one,” she said.

The shop also tries to regularly rotate in new yogurt flavors seasonally, like Pumpkin Pie for the fall, for example. Customers may see ginger bread and mint cookie flavored yogurts around Christmas time, Thatcher said.

Many customers seem to like the Yogurt Spot’s French Macarons as well, according to Hatcher. A sweet meringue-based confection made with egg white, icing sugar, granulated sugar, almond powder or ground almond, and food coloring, the shop’s macarons come in many different flavors including Strawberry-Icing, Strawberry-Jelly, Orange Lemonade-Icing, Passion Fruit-Jelly, Lemon-Icing, Pistachio-Almond-Icing, Café Latte-Icing, Dark Chocolate-Icing, Milk Chocolate-Icing and Vanilla-Icing.

“It’s a cookie made out of meringue. It’s got jelly or icing on the inside of it, so it doesn’t taste like an actual cookie,” she said. “We keep a lot of flavors like chocolate and fruity macarons.”

What we tried

Like most yogurt places, Yogurt Spot is self-serve. You choose your size – regular or large cup or waffle cone. The indecisive can even cheat and choose both by getting the waffle cup. You then make your way through a line of what seems like endless topping choices of candies, nuts, syrups, and creams. Yummy!

And rejoice, cheesecake lovers! Yogurt Spot has just the flavor for you — I Love New York Cheesecake. We added cheesecake bites, graham cracker crumbs, granola, waffle pieces, yogurt chips, strawberries, marshmallow cream, and strawberry syrup to our cup.

“A lot of people like to get the same thing each time,” Thatcher said. “They always add the cheesecake and strawberry pieces and make it look like an actual cheesecake.”

This is a heavenly choice that we highly recommend.

Then came Cookies and Cream; we decided to try that in their homemade waffle cone and we weren’t disappointed. With recommended Oreo Bites sprinkled on top, it was everything we imagined and then some.

Yogurt Spot’s winter hours are Monday-Thursday from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. – 10 p.m. and Sunday from noon – 9 p.m. Look for Yogurt Spot on Waitr, follow The Yogurt Spot Beaumont on Facebook, and tag @YogurtSpotBmt on Instagram.
