The competition for steak lovers’ hearts just heated up. LongHorn Steakhouse opened its doors Monday, Aug. 10, in Beaumont, bringing a fresh and exciting new option for Southeast Texans to curb their carnivorous cravings.

The 6,300-square-feet restaurant, at 5920 Eastex Freeway, is owned by Darden Restaurants Inc., which owns and operates more than 1,500 restaurants that generate over $6.3 billion in annual sales. The company is headquartered in Orlando. There are 30 LongHorn Steakhouse restaurants in Texas and more than 480 in the U.S., said Jeremy Fults, managing partner at the LongHorn Steakhouse in Beaumont.

LongHorn’s summer Peak Season, Chef’s Showcase and Prime Time menus are sure to become popular with Southeast Texas customers, Fults said.

“We offer an excellent variety of fresh, never-frozen steak cuts that are hand-seasoned, then expertly grilled by a certified LongHorn grill master,” Fults said. “LongHorn entrées come with a hand-chopped salad, honey-wheat bread baked fresh every 20 minutes and with delicious side dishes like our Steakhouse Mac & Cheese. Beyond our steaks, we offer fresh grilled chicken, fresh Atlantic salmon marinated in our house-made brown sugar bourbon marinade, and baby-back ribs that are slow roasted for four hours so that the meat falls off the bone and then basted in our homemade barbecue sauce. We feature seasonally relevant ingredients and develop dishes that highlight the freshest flavors of the season on our Chef’s Showcase and Peak Season menus. For those guests looking for lighter options, we have those, too.”

LongHorn’s Peak Season menu changes four times a year and features fresh flavors of the season. Guests can enjoy new items like Fried Green Tomatoes, Grille Chicken Tortilla Soup, Fire-Grilled Corn on the Cob and Blueberry Lemon Butter Cake.

The Chef’s Showcase menu celebrates LongHorn’s executive chefs’ culinary inspiration and creativity. This summer, it features Hickory Salt Crusted NY Strip, Smoky Garlic Outlaw Ribeye and Grilled Citrus Salmon.

LongHorn’s Prime Time menu features late afternoon specials, including a variety of $3, $4 and $5 drinks and appetizers. Prime Time is offered Monday through Friday from 4-7 p.m.

The restaurant, which is reminiscent of rancher’s home according to the LongHorn Steakhouse website, will seat more than 240 guests, Fults said.

Fults said the company chose Beaumont to expand to because the city is a great place with long-term growth potential.

“We’re very excited to be here and have received outstanding support from the community,” Fults said. “Our goal is to be Beaumont’s favorite steakhouse.”

What we tried

It might seem counter-intuitive for a steakhouse, but one of our favorite dishes was the Brown Butter Lemon Tilapia & Grilled Shrimp. The shrimp were tasty and the fish is server piping hot (just how we like it) on bed of rice with your choice of sides. We went with the steamed broccoli to better accompany the delicious fish, but LongHorn’s Signature Sides include Parmesan Creamed Spinach, Fresh Steamed Asparagus or Steakhouse Mac & Cheese. Seafood lovers might be surprised that LongHorn doesn’t keep cocktail sauce — a must have for some —but our waiter said he learned how to make it in a culinary class and whipped up a fantastic homemade version. So if you find yourself in need, ask for Darryll.

And about that Steakhouse Mac & Cheese. So good. We chose this side to accompany the babyback ribs, which were good if a little too saucy for our tastes — especially since they came with more sauce on the side, a nice touch. Really, we just wanted more of that baked mac and cheese with bacon on top.
