Sam’s Southern Eatery offers lots of food for less
When it comes to offering quantity without sacrificing quality, Sam’s Southern Eatery has figured out the formula.
“It’s both,” said Moe Ghazawenh, manager of Sam’s Southern Eatery in Beaumont. “If you order six shrimp, we usually give you seven or eight. So you get extra food, and everything’s fresh.”
Sam’s Southern Eatery first opened its doors in January 2008 in Shreveport, Louisiana, where it was met with great feedback from the community. Customers loved the fresh seafood, generous portions, and affordable prices so much that the business was able to expand with 51 other locations in nine states to meet the needs of its rapidly growing customer base. It currently employs over 750 people.
The Beaumont location, which opened in 2014, is right across College Street from Baptist Hospital in a bustling and growing Mars Shopping Plaza.
“We get really busy around lunchtime and even have people come from downtown to eat,” Ghazawenh said.
With locations in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee and, of course, Texas, Sam’s is bringing Southern cuisine to the people who appreciate it the most.
To help the eatery reach new customers, Sam’s joined Waitr, a food delivery service, two months ago.
“We’re doing very good in the Waitr app,” Ghazawenh said. “It’s working out pretty well.”
Customers can download the Waitr app from Google Play or the App Store, and access Sam’s menu and have their favorite dishes delivered directly to their door.
What we tried
Sam’s is known for its big, jumbo shrimp but serves a variety of menu items including Philly cheese steak sandwiches, po-boys, chicken wings, and several fish and shrimp combinations.
With over 50 menu items to choose from, it was a tough decision, but the friendly staff walked us through the menu, and suggested a few customer favorites.
The Philly Cheese Steak sandwich is huge, served with 10 ounces of beef, grilled onions and fresh bell peppers, Swiss cheese, and comes dressed with mayo. It comes with two sides for only $7.49 — that’s hard to beat. It was one of the best Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches we’ve eaten. Meat was tender, cheese was perfectly melted and the hidden onions were a delightful surprise that gave it some added texture.
Everything you order comes with a choice of two sides, ensuring that you will not leave hungry. Sides include corn, green beans, coleslaw, red beans and rice, and fries.
We also tried the No. 28, which comes with three fish and three shrimp, two sides and a roll for $8.99. The portions were nearly enough for two people. We can’t overemphasize how fresh the food was.
Finally, we had to try another customer favorite, the chicken wings. The No. 40 comes with six chicken wings and two sides and a roll for $8.99. The wings are Louisiana-style and made with a delicious mustard sauce.
If you’re trying to cut down on your fried foods, many of Sam’s menu items come with a grilled option, and the restaurant serves salads as well.
The family meals are perfect for those get-togethers or big occasions. Customers can get 30 jumbo shrimp for $34.99, 40 for $44.99, or 50 for $54.99; 30 fried fish for $34.99, 40 for $44.99, or $50 for $54.99; and 20 chicken strips for $23.99 or 20 chicken wings for $23.99.
“We have very good prices for the seafood platters,” said Ghazawenh, a Lamar University student from Jordan who plans to earn his MBA after graduating with his bachelor’s in finance. “We’re looking to sell more. There’s a little less profit, but the owner Sam is looking at total sales.”
