Two Magnolias: Hearty lunches, catered events and holiday cooking
The heartiest little tea room in Texas is Two Magnolias in the Art Museum of Southeast Texas (AMSET).
We know what you’re thinking. “Tea room” means salad and quiche. And yes, Two Magnolias has an extensive selection of salads with homemade dressings and regular quiche offerings, but the restaurant and catering company also offers daily meal specials like stuffed chicken breast and chicken spaghetti; on Fridays, they serve up a plentiful buffet for the hungriest among us.
Owner Becky Burleson has been cooking and catering professionally in Southeast Texas for more than 15 years. She started at Ashland House, then operated out of the Green Beanery in the Oaks Historic District, moving her business five years ago to Café Arts, a spacious alcove in AMSET flanked with windows and the works of a featured local artist.
Quiche loving Southeast Texans will find Burleson’s quiches divine, from the Lorraine to the seafood varieties; these lunch pies combine the freshest ingredients all melted together with luscious cheeses. Complement your slice of quiche with a cup of homemade soup of the day – potato, vegetable, among others – or a side garden salad with homemade dressing like creamy cucumber or raspberry vinaigrette.
Every day, Burleson and her chef Vicky Bloodsworth, a graduate of culinary school, make fresh chicken salad. This fall try it with a cup of chicken and sausage gumbo or in the “trio” – chicken salad, fruit salad and garden salad. The “guilt-free” chicken salad is a grilled chicken breast topped with crumbled pecans over a fresh garden salad with cucumbers, tomatoes and onions and served with fat-free raspberry vinaigrette dressing.
Get your salad on bread! Two Magnolias makes a variety of sandwiches and wraps including a vegetable sandwich loaded with veggies on a sourdough bun. Other sandwiches include a grilled panini – ham or turkey with cheese and pesto on a grilled Italian panini bread; shrimp and avocado – shrimp salad, guacamole, lettuce and tomato served on a toasted sourdough bun; and a Magnolia Cuban – Swiss cheese, ham and salami served with mayonnaise, mustard and pickles, and also served on a grilled Italian panini bread. Choose from a dozen different sandwiches and wraps, all served with chips or a side salad.
Daily specials, called the “Hot Plate of the Day,” range from meatloaf to Hawaiian chicken over pineapple rice but always come with soup and a fresh garden salad. Word on the street is chicken spaghetti is a local favorite, and Burleson admits that some customers call to find out what day she is serving it.The Friday buffet always includes three or four hot entrees, sides, salad, drink and dessert.
Dessert is divine at Two Magnolias. If you don’t get the brownie topped with caramel sauce, get the famous bread pudding or better yet, eat the brownie with lunch and order the bread pudding to take home for dinner.
