Weekly Dish: Big portions, flavors have kept one-of-a kind steakhouse a popular destination for 20 years

Cattle Company

Big portions and even bigger flavors have kept Cattle Company a relevant restaurant in Beaumont for the past 20 years.

Mouth-watering sirloins, homemade meatloaf and chopped steak from Mom’s Corner, a variety of hearty sides and big buttery rolls have kept customers coming back again and again.

Although many confuse the steakhouse for a chain restaurant, it is actually the only Cattle Company in existence and is an East Texas original owned by Nacogdoches-based company Great Texas Foods, also known for its popular Café del Rio Mexican restaurants in Beaumont and Lufkin.

“A lot of people think we’re a chain because our name is actually the Brazos Cattle Company. But this is the only one that’s standing. That’s why we usually just drop the Brazos and say Cattle Company,” said Taneka Shepard, assistant manager at Brazos Cattle Company for more than 5 years. Shepard has worked for Great Texas Foods for more than 15 years with experience at Café Del Rio as well.

Cattle Company has gained a reputation not only for its great service but also the two kinds of food that the restaurant features — steaks and country cooking.

“We are a steakhouse, so that’s what we pride ourselves on, but our Mom’s Corner is coming on strong,” said Shepard. “The meatloaf and the home cooking – everybody wants that. … We do make everything in-house. We have daily (lunch) specials on our Mom’s Corner from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. We also do a prime rib from Thursday – Sunday.

“It’s regular home-cooked food. You can’t go wrong with it. It’s food that you come and eat and it makes you think about home.”

Mom’s Corner, a section of the menu that offers entrees that beckon memories of home-cooked meals that momma used to make, is not only great tasting but also reasonably priced. Choices include Mom’s Meatloaf, Southwest Chop Steak, Granny Belle’s Pot Roast, chicken fried chicken, chicken fried steak, charbroiled chicken breast and a veggie platter comprised of your choice of four side dishes.

The menu offering has been a staple of Cattle Company since the start.

“It’s consistent, and I think that’s what keeps it going,” Shepard said.

Cattle Company’s steaks are a slice above the rest as well.

“We have certified Angus beef,” Shepard said. “A lot of people don’t have it. It is a grade cut of meat, and we do it in-house. We cut our own meat. Our smallest rib eye is 11 ounces, but if you want a 16-18 ounce, we can accommodate you. We are grilling them on open fire, so it gives it that grill taste.

“I think we have just about the best steak, and that’s because of the meat and the seasoning. We actually have someone that makes our own seasoning, so you aren’t going to taste it anywhere else. … It’s a special blend that we have made for us. I think that’s what sets us apart.”

While the steaks and Mom’s Corner are go-to menu items, Cattle Company also offers a variety of other great choices, including grilled or fried catfish and shrimp brochette, which are grilled shrimp stuffed with Monterrey Jack cheese and jalapeños, wrapped in bacon. Mmm.

The Cowboy Nachos also come highly recommended and are piled high with chili con queso, charbroiled steak bites, tomatoes, jalapeños and sour cream. There are also a number of salads to choose from if you’re looking for something lighter.

And if you don’t feel like cooking this holiday season, Cattle Company has you covered with its Holiday Helper deal. You get a 12-14 pound turkey, corn bread dressing, two choices of sides from Mom’s Corner, giblet gravy, cranberry sauce, your choice of homemade pie (pecan, chocolate or coconut), for $74.99. The meal serves 12-14 people. You can also add a dozen rolls for $6.99. Hams and extra sides are available, as well as white chocolate bread pudding.

We took part in the Holiday Helper deal for Thanksgiving and were not surprised how delicious and fresh each dish was. The turkey was loaded with both dark and white meat, tender and juicy with perfection. And the side dishes came ready in their own pans. We had enough food to start our own cafeteria.
