The Weekly Dish: Going back for more

The Weekly Dish is a place to spotlight the best things to eat around Southeast Texas, and 2018 did not disappoint. The delicious eats showcased every week have included tried-and-true standards, totally new concepts and fun takes on classic plates. While all dishes featured are outstanding among Southeast Texas grub, these five dishes are some of our favorites that were featured in 2018.

The Grill’s Surf and Turf is a bold standout that brings together two opposing proteins for amazing results. The duo of a six-ounce grass-fed USDA beef filet mignon, simply seasoned with salt and pepper, and a six-ounce cold-water lobster tail, sprinkled with paprika, is a pair made in heaven. The savory beef and succulent shellfish work together to treat the diner to a plate filled with variety. The side of Yukon Gold mashed potatoes is full of flavor and makes every bite a delight. The Grill by Arfeen, Smith & Payne is located at 6680 Calder Ave. in Beaumont. For more information, visit www.theaspgrill.com or call (409) 866-0039.

Goodies’ Apple Pecan Chicken Salad is a healthy choice with major flavor. The colorful salad brings together fruit, protein, dairy and vegetables in a tasty way. Composed of mixed greens, apples, pecans, cranberries, crumbled blue cheese and grilled chicken drizzled in cranberry vinaigrette, this salad is unlike anything else in Southeast Texas. The apple slices and pecan add a tasty crunch while the cranberries oppose the blue cheese in a delicious contrast. The greens make an excellent canvas for the sweet cranberry vinaigrette that goes a long way in flavor. This salad brings together simple ingredients in an appetizing arrangement. Goodies is located at 115 Highway 326 in Sour Lake. For more information visit www.goodiescaters.com or call (409) 287-2400.

Taco Rey’s Fajita Quesadillas is a generously portioned take on the Tex-Mex staple. With choice of chicken, beef or mixed covered in American and Monterey jack cheeses packaged in a toasted tortilla this restaurant favorite is filling and flavorful at the same time. The juicy choice of protein and interesting blend of cheeses create a savory delight that shouldn’t be missed. Served with a side of lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream and guacamole, the dish can be customized to the diner’s taste. The crunchy lettuce and juicy tomatoes are great additions, and the bold sour cream adds its signature flavor to the quesadillas. However, the creamy guacamole is the star of the sides and tastes great scooped by a quesadilla. Taco Rey is located at 1505 Nederland Ave. in Nederland. The Tender Yakitori from Koi Japanese Sushi Bar & Lounge is the epitome of savory. This take on traditional street-style beef skewers with yakiniku sauce is a must-try for any beef lover. The grilled beef skewers are strikingly savory and live up to the name, tender. The beef is delicious enough on its own; however, it is the yakiniku sauce that turns this home run into a grand slam. The sauce is a complex blend of flavors that needs to be tasted to understand. The savory sauce brings its multifaceted tastes to the dish and the tender yakitori serves as an excellent canvas to be painted. The versatile plate can make for an excellent precursor to a meal or combined with a sushi roll to act as a main course. Koi Japanese Sushi Bar & Lounge is located at 3350 Dowlen Rd, Ste. C in Beaumont. For more information, call (409) 347-8202.

As far as sandwiches are concerned, The Southwest from Honey B Ham can’t be beat. Turkey, bacon cheese, guacamole, chipotle mayonnaise, lettuce and tomato between your choice of roll, this sandwich is the perfect size for a delicious lunch  — or any meal for that matter. The turkey and cheese makes the perfect backdrop for the crunchy bacon and juicy tomato to really shine. The creamy guacamole acts as an exceptional counterbalance for the spicy chipotle mayonnaise, ultimately meeting in the middle for an exceptional blend of flavor. While diners have a choice of breads for the sandwich, the crispy ciabatta roll is recommended. Honey B Ham is located at 6385 Calder Ave. in Beaumont. For more information, call (409) 860-3151.

As hard as the decision was to decide on five dishes featured in the past year for our year in review, we can look forward to the weekly dishes to come and the good eats that will come with them.
