Cattle Company

Big portions and even bigger flavors have kept Cattle Company a relevant restaurant in Beaumont for the past 20 years.

Mouth-watering sirloins, homemade meatloaf and chopped steak from Mom’s Corner, a variety of hearty sides and big buttery rolls have kept customers coming back again and again.

Foodies from around the area showed up for the “Food Trucks Invade” event at the Logon Cafe on Nov. 11. Dat Mac, Blue Dave’s Barbecue and Pops and Rockets ice pops sold a variety of delicious dinners and desserts. Mucho Bueno served some Tex-Mex favorites like the carne asada fries and spicy shrimp taco pictured. The carne asada fries with an ample amount of carne asada, lots of cheese, sour cream, guacamole and salsa were out of this world and well worth the 15-minute wait. It paired great with the Ballast Point Commodore.

For Kevin Smith, bringing back Monceaux’s to Mid-County means more than just bringing back a popular restaurant dating back decades. He’s also keeping his mother’s memory alive, and her treasured recipes.

The late Helen McKinney was the cook at the original Monceaux’s in Port Arthur and brought her recipes with her when she began working there.

Brian Landry’s experience epitomizes mom-and-pop. He grew up working in his father’s grocery store in Port Neches — Rodney’s Hello Grocery Store. Father and son ventured into the restaurant business together with Landry’s Cajun Eatery, but his father retired in 2001 and later passed away in 2012.

Smart phones and home gaming consoles seem to have all but killed off the old arcades that Gen Xers fondly remember as favorite hangouts after school. And while you still have a few big mega arcades in Houston like Dave & Buster’s and Main Event that cater as much if not more to adults than kids, and the chain arcade Tilt in Beaumont, the mom-and-pop style arcades that you used to see on almost every street corner in the ’80s and ’90s seem to have faded away.

Many who enjoyed dining in downtown Beaumont at the Quality Café were more than sad when it officially closed for the last time in 2014. Some went every day to 730 Liberty St., and those who still talk about the tasty meals always mention the Thursday special — spaghetti and meatballs.

Get those taste buds ready because on Tuesday, July 25, from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. at J. Wilson’s will be the return of the Café’s spaghetti and meatballs cooked by Cheri Parigi herself, who last owned the restaurant in 2014.

After a five-year hiatus, a long-standing Mauriceville tradition has returned and is receiving an outstanding reception.

Tuffy’s Eatery, best known for its homemade rolls and pies — not to mention its plate-filling chicken-fried steaks — reopened May 16, and Southeast Texans have shown that they appreciate the restaurant’s comeback.
