Cardinal Jazz Orchestra

The Cardinal Jazz Orchestra’s fall concert Thursday, Oct. 13, will feature fresh big band versions of such standards as Cole Porter’s Love for Sale, and Simon and Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Water. They will also perform original material by some of America’s most well known composers of contemporary big band music, including Gordon Goodwin, Bob Florence, and Patrick Williams.

The event is free and open to the public, and will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Rothwell Recital Hall on the campus of Lamar University in Beaumont.

Lamar’s Jazz Band has history dating back to the 1950s when it was under the direction of Dr. Charles A. Wiley. President Emeritus Dr. James M. Simmons took over the Jazz Band in 1970 before passing the torch to Dr. J. Wayne Dyess, who directed the jazz band from 1983 until 2012. The jazz band is currently under the direction of Richard “Rick” Condit, director of jazz studies at LU.

“We are looking forward to some very important events in the next few months, and this first concert will set the standard for the whole year” said Condit. “We want to play our very best for our own community”
