There are times when Christian Bale’s off-screen behavior gets more attention than his on-screen roles. “Hostiles” should have earned him another Oscar nomination — the good kind of attention. But the field was tight this year and, unfortunately, Bale’s performance — and this excellent movie from writer/director Scott Cooper — will get lost in the post-holiday movie shuffle.

This is a contemplative western, not your average shoot ‘em up, although there is plenty of that. Elegiac in nature and stoic in character, this is beautifully filmed and timely in its themes...
