Groves pecan festival returns

Fun in a nutshell at Groves Pecan Festival 2017

It’s time to celebrate the lovely pecan as the 48th annual Groves Pecan Festival is now four full days beginning Thursday, Oct. 26, and running through Sunday, Oct. 29, at Lions Park (6200 Jackson). If you are looking for “fun,” you can find it in a “nutshell.”

Families are welcome to attend and eat your way through the food area with ice cream, funnel cakes, pecan pie, curly fries, gumbo, hamburgers, barbecue, pork-a-bobs, boudain balls, nachos, pistolettes, breakfast food then you can wash it down with freshly squeezed homemade lemonade.

Gates to the carnival as well as the food and crafts booth open at 5 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday at noon. There is no charge for admission.

Thursday, Oct. 26, the festival will host a Halloween Costume Contest at 8 p.m. There will be three categories: Infants – 3 years, K – 12th grade, and 18 years and up.

Musical entertainment begins on Friday evening with local duo Curse & The Cure at 7:30 p.m.

The Groves Pecan Festival Parade will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. The parade begins at 39th Street at Cleveland Avenue and heads west on 39th Street, then travels down to Gulf Avenue, where the parade ends after making a right turn on Gulf.

Also on Saturday, the Pie Eating Contest will begin at 1 p.m. and the Cooking with Pecans Contest from 3-4:30 p.m.

Entertainment will be provided by Tonalta School of Music, Armentor’s United Martial Arts, Debbie’s Dance Etc., DanceWorks, Lamar Jazz Band and local act Thick as Thieves will play at 7:30 p.m.

The Pecan Festival Pageant Queen and her court will be announced at 5:30 p.m.

Sunday, the pet show will begin at 1 p.m. with entertainment from the Port Neches and Groves middle school choirs as well as the PN-G Indian Singers.
