Spindletop-Gladys City 115th anniversary

Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum on the Lamar University campus will mark the 115th anniversary of the Lucas Gusher at Spindletop with a day packed with re-enactments, activities, craft demonstrations and entertainment.

“We just want to celebrate a moment in time that has much historical significance,” said museum director Troy Gray. “All ages should find things that they will enjoy.”

The Drillers Reunion will take place Saturday, Jan. 9, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. featuring re-enactments performed by the Big Thicket Outlaws and music provided by the Traveling Murphys. Visitors will also be able to view demonstrations of blacksmithing, printing, soap making and woodcarving. There will also be fudge tasting at the drug store. The museum’s own Ladies Temperance Union will take over the Log Cabin Saloon for the day to offer special tea times. Children will enjoy the oil derrick ring toss, “cow patty” toss, stick-horse races, and other old-time games. The museum’s Lucas Gusher re-enactment is scheduled twice, at 10:30 a.m. and at 4 p.m. as the climax of the day’s festivities. Food trucks will be on hand so visitors can enjoy themselves and not have to worry about where to get lunch.

New this year is the first annual Boomtown Tug o’War contest. Call the museum to register a team of six to eight people. This year’s winner will be the first name added to the Tug o’War trophy that will be displayed prominently in the gift shop. Winners will also receive prizes to take home.

Admission for the Drillers Reunion is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors age 60 and over, and $2 for children 12 and younger, with free admission for visitors wearing period costume. Visitors may get $1 discount if they purchase their tickets early. There will be interpreters present for the deaf.

Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum is at 5550 Jimmy Simmons Blvd. on Lamar University campus in Beaumont. Plenty of free parking is available.
