Taste of the Triangle 2016

This year’s honorees are Iris and Jerry Nathan.

It’s been 33 years and counting, but rest assured the annual “Taste of the Triangle” is far from stale. In fact, this year’s event sponsored by the Sabine Area Restaurant Association will feature a few fresh faces along with the time-honored traditions associated with the area’s premiere foodie event.

This year’s Fat Tuesday celebration is set for Tuesday, Feb. 9, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Civic Center at 701 Main in downtown Beaumont. Advance tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the Civic Center box office; tickets at the door are $25 at the door. Parking is free.

Jay Jenkinson, SARA president, said in addition to the usual samplings from dozens of area restaurants and beverage companies, some food booths will be manned by representatives of non-restaurant civic organizations.

Funds from the event will benefit Southeast Texas civic and charitable organizations and go toward scholarships, especially for the Lamar University hospitality program.

This year’s honorees are Iris and Jerry Nathan.

The Nathans, who have been married for more than 50 years, can rightfully be called an iconic Beaumont couple. They have long been known for their civic involvement and service to the community. Jerry, a sixth-generation Beaumont native, is also known for his work as an attorney. And Iris, who is originally from Jacksonville, Florida, has earned fame of her own for her expertise in the kitchen. She once owned a take-out catering company, wrote a cookbook called The Happy Cookers and also was known for writing a regular food column.

“(SARA) does so many wonderful things for the community, we’re just proud to be associated with it,” Jerry said, adding that the honor really belonged to Iris. “I have nothing to do with food but to eat it,” he said. “She is a fabulous chef.”

Billy Poullard & Zydeco Combo will also be performing.
