Toby Keith celebrates 25th anniversary of first big hit with tour and Beaumont concert

Toby Keith’s breakout song “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” was released Feb. 12, 1993. The first single from Keith’s self-titled debut album, it went on to reach No. 1 on the Country chart and became one of the most played songs on country radio in the ’90s.

To celebrate the big hit, Keith will perform at Beaumont’s Ford Pavilion for the Should’ve Been A Cowboy XXV Tour on Saturday, June 30, presented by Ford F Series featuring special guest and Texas native Granger Smith. It will also celebrate Ford Park’s 15th anniversary, brought to you by Beaumont Emergency Center.

Tickets are $30 for lawn seats, and range from $55 to $85 for reserved seating, and $115 for VIP pit area. They can be purchased at the Ford Park box office, and Ticketmaster outlets including online at or by calling (800) 745-3000.

Keith wrote “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” after a night out with hunting buddies in Kansas. After walking into a bar and asking a woman to dance, Keith was turned down, only to see her accept a dance from a cowboy.

Later that night, Keith wrote the song in a hotel bathroom in about 20 minutes.

That song helped launch a career that includes 19 studio albums, two Christmas albums, and five compilation records. Keith saw 61 songs chart with 20 No. 1 hits and another 21 reach the Top 20.

His longest-lasting No. 1 songs are “Beer for My Horses,” a duet with Willie Nelson in 2003, and “As Good as I Once Was” in 2005. Both spent six weeks atop of the chart.

Some of the other big hits are “How Do You Like Me Now,” “Country Comes to Town,” “I Wanna Talk About Me,” “Who’s Your Daddy,” “I’m Just Talkin’ About Tonight,” “My List,” “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American),” “Whiskey Girl,” “American Soldier,” “I Love This Bar,” “High Maintenance Woman,” “Made in America,” “Red Solo Cup” and “Beers Ago.”

Keith is also a successful entrepreneur; he opened several Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill restaurant concepts throughout Oklahoma including at the Winstar World Casino and inside The Flamingo in Las Vegas.

His Dream Walkin’ Farms produces premium meat like certified Angus beef, hickory smoked turkey and smoked bone-in ham. Keith also owns a 300-acre farm in Central Oklahoma that breeds, raises and races thoroughbred horses.
