Recently, “Manchester by the Sea” arrived, and “Fences” is doing a second tour after earning some solid nominations. But the surprise among these is “Moonlight.”

Classic Movie Night continues Friday, Feb. 10, with the 1993 romantic comedy drama Sleepless in Seattle at the historic Jefferson Theatre in downtown Beaumont. Directed by Nora Ephron, the movie stars Tom Hanks as “Sam Baldwin” who loses his wife to cancer. His son calls in to a radio talk show to tell the story, and one of the listeners, Annie (played by Meg Ryan), wants to meet him. The film grossed over $220 million at the box office.

The Mardi Gras season is officially underway, so let the good times roll at the third annual Pardi Gras on Saturday, Feb. 11, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Beaumont Civic Center. Dance the night away with local party band Champagne Room, who will be playing the best of old school Motown, R&B and funk. Beans and sausage will be served, and the cash bars will be stocked with the drinks of your choice. Tickets are $24 and can be purchased online at tickemaster.com or at the door.

Oscar nominations were announced last week, and like most years, there were surprises, snubs and foregone winners in some categories. Or maybe not. The Screen Actors Guild Awards were held last weekend and there were some game-changing surprises. Because the SAG awards start with actors nominating and then voting for other actors, it can be a better predictor of what is to come at the Oscar ceremony a few weeks from now.
