Director Denis Villeneuve heads for the stars after the drug-fueled border wars of “Sicario” early this year. Even that movie, filled with violence and an unrelenting tension, was in its own way understated, a hallmark of this director’s style. So, too, is “Arrival,” a thoughtful, almost meditative movie that is as much about the limitations of the heart as it is about the outer limits.

The Jefferson Theatre (345 Fannin) in downtown Beaumont is rolling out the red carpet on Friday, Nov. 18, in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the release of the film It’s a Wonderful Life. Doors will open at 6 p.m. for live entertainment, craft beer and cocktails, and fun for the entire family, with the film beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased Civic Center box office. Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story On Stage is an unprecedented live experience, exploding with heart-pounding music played live by an eight-piece onstage band, passionate romance and sensational dancing. Southeast Texans can take a journey down the Silk Road from India to Istanbul at the Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas Foundation’s eighth annual La Soirée on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2017, inside the Beaumont Civic Center.

The theme is Arabian Nights, and guests will be transported to Royal Sultan’s palace for the party of the year. A profusion of light, color, sights, sounds and dances from around the world will transport those in attendance to another place in time

Jazz at the Lake returns to the downtown Event Centre (700 Crockett St.) in Beaumont on Thursday, Nov. 10, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to all ages. Performing will be the Jazz Innovators with Barbara Lynn. Lynn needs no introduction. A graduate of Hebert High School, Lynn, now 73, saw her 1962 single “You’ll Lose a Good Thing” go to No. 1 in the country. She went on to perform at the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem and twice on American Bandstand.
