For those who want to bring in 2017 in the friendly confines of their own home or set sail to a house party, there are plenty of drink options available at your local liquor store. And of course, we recommend any of the Messina brothers’ stores, with five great locations throughout Southeast Texas including three in Beaumont (2525 College; 6666 Phelan; 1412 Magnolia) and two in Port Arthur (3748 Gulfway and 2606 Memorial).

If I want to indulge in some Christmas treats, I’d prefer the real thing over this treacle. It’s like having high fructose corn syrup via an IV. Unpleasant, and, definitely not good for you. This movie shamelessly tugs at your heart, something it has no business doing, even if Will Smith is trying for an Oscar nomination — again. So, fair warning: I’m about to go all Ebenezer Scrooge on this one.

It’s been quite a while since Southeast Texas has had a zoo to call its own. From the 1920s to the ’70s, Beaumont had a small zoo at Magnolia Park that included bears and lions and much more —about 150 animals at its peak in the 1950s, according to local news archives. These animals were relocated to San Antonio in 1970, and it wasn’t until 2013 that Southeast Texas saw another zoo.
