The 2017 Jefferson County Go Texan Cook-Off is set for April 21 and 22 at the Elk’s Lodge, 11431 Highway 90, Beaumont. The two-day event will raise funds for local youth.

“This is the last major event of the year for us (JCGT),” said Jay LeBlanc, Jefferson County Go Texan ambassador. “We want everyone to come out, grab a great meal and help us in giving our stand-out local youth scholarships.”

International comedy/ventriloquist sensation Jeff Dunham will perform at Ford Arena on Sunday, April 23, with an afternoon showtime of 3 p.m. The Perfectly Unbalanced Tour will feature his cast of characters, which includes the puppets Walter, Peanut, José Jalapeño on a Stick and others.

In 1981, the Texas Legislature designated Mauriceville as the “Crawfish Capital of Texas,” and 37 years later, the Mauriceville Crawfish Festival has become the “go-to” festival for all things crawfish.

One of the oldest running festivals in the state, the 37th annual festival will begin Friday, April 21, and go through Sunday, April 23. Sitting on 15 acres, the festival also celebrates music, art and culture, highlighting the unique heritage of Mauriceville and the surrounding areas.

The Betty Greenberg Center for Performing Arts is in the midst of hosting “Steel Magnolias” for three shows this weekend beginning Friday, April 14, at 7:30 p.m. and two on Saturday, April 15, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Written by Robert Harling as a play, “Steel Magnolias” made its Off-Broadway debut in 1987 then was adapted as a big screen release in 1989 starring Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirly MacLaine, Julia Roberts and Daryl Hannah. It finally made its Broadway debut in 2005 at the Lyceum Theatre.
