The Christus Southeast Texas Foundation Gala has become one of the most anticipated events each year and has drawn some of the biggest names in entertainment such as Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Lionel Richie, James Taylor, Chicago and Keith Urban.

And this year will be no different.

The No. 1 selling duo in music history — Daryl Hall & John Oates — will take the stage at the 38th annual Christus Southeast Texas Foundation Gala on Saturday, April 21, at the Beaumont Civic Center.

Cold and wet weather put the skids to fishing on inland lakes and bays last weekend, but with a decent warming trend this week, things should pick up.

Cool weather flowers

Just when you think one more day of dreary drizzly weather will send you straight to Mexico, you see a patch of colorful winter blooms that cheer you up. February is when I need a splash of color the most. We seldom freeze, but our cool weather temperatures have scared away most of our summer bloomers by now. But think about cheery pansies, snapdragons, ornamental kale, English daisies and my favorites, primrose and cyclamen. We can enjoy them here until temperatures start to climb in late spring.

As we continue to celebrate “Black History Month” each February, it is important that this not just be a date on the calendar but that it contributes to the changing of our future by making us aware of our past.

Soft pop music plays in the background, light fixtures leisurely transition from color to color while you relax on a love seat that has become dining room seating. You are in Koi Japanese Sushi Bar & Lounge on Dowlen Road in Beaumont.

Clyde the Cat

Meet Clyde, a male black and white domestic house cat weighing about 12 pounds. Clyde came to the shelter on Christmas Eve 2017, where staff was told he had an owner. Sadly, the owner never came for Clyde. He is very sweet, loving and a little lazy. He loves attention and will let you know when he needs an ear rub. Clyde has been at the shelter too long and needs to be with a loving family or individual for companionship. Clyde is meowing for YOU! Adoption fee for cats is $90, which includes vaccinations, spay or neuter, worming and flea treatment.

South of the Boredom by Jerry Bradley

The holidays are over. As we settle into the humdrum of our daily lives again, perhaps you’re longing for something different, something exciting, some escape from the ennui. Jerry Bradley’s latest poetry collection, South of the Boredom, offers such an escape from the realities of life to what almost seems like a different world from our beloved Beaumont, south of the border to Mexico. On the surface, these poems revel in the exotic wonder of our southern neighbor and give readers a wide-eyed tourist’s perspective of the culture and landscape.

Taste of the Triangle

What is synonymous in Southeast Texas with Fat Tuesday? Of course it’s the long-standing tradition of Taste of the Triangle, which will celebrate 35 years on Tuesday, Feb. 13, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Beaumont Civic Center.

Southeast Texas’ premier foodie fest will have everything your belly desires as more than 40 area restaurants serve up everything from Italian, Cajun and Thai, to country classics and soul food, in a festive Mardi Gras atmosphere.

Lesley Manville and Daniel Day-Lewis in Paul Thomas Anderson's Phantom Thread

For a director so devoted to his own material and vision, Paul Thomas Anderson has suffused his latest film with delicate notes of Hitchcock that recall the classic “Rebecca.” Prior to its release, very little was known about “Phantom Thread,” save for the fact its star, Daniel Day Lewis, has declared this to be his last movie. Based on his stellar performance in this, I hope he will change his mind.
