The Pompano Club is no more. Hurricane Harvey caused nearly a foot of water to flood the establishment and shut it down.

“The Pompano Club was a private dining club. You had to be a member to come eat or you had to be with a member. We had dancing. We had a live band that played. It used to be every night and then we dropped it down to Thursdays and Saturdays and then we dropped it down to Saturdays,” said Sean Schneider, who has worked for the Pompano Club for more than 23 years.

Times change, however, and so does clientele.

There has been much discussion concerning the recently adopted tax measure by our Congress. Our president claims he has given us all a great Christmas present. The question is, has he given us a valuable gift, or a lump of coal?

The New Year’s Eve celebration got an early start for Lamar State College Port Arthur on Dec. 31 as the Seahawk basketball team went off like a Roman candle, scoring the first 15 points of its year-ending, tournament-closing game, winning 91-57 over North America University in the LSCPA New Year’s Day Classic.

The win improved LSCPA’s record to 6-7 for the season as the Seahawks get set to open the 2018 half of their schedule on Friday, Jan. 5, when they host NJCAA Region XIV rival Panola College at the Parker Center in Port Arthur at 6 p.m.

For those who were born before the mid-20th Century (1950), the approaching of 2018 brings us closer and closer to the mid-21st Century and only seven years until the quarter-of-a-century mark. It seems like yesterday that the Y2K scare was at the top of our “worry list.” How, those of us “historically” minded, often think in terms of anticipated events expected within the next 20 years and wonder how many of those events we will personally experience.

Binky the cat

This is Binkey, our sweet gal. She is a loving, kind, young, black and white female domestic house cat. Probably in human years, Binky is equivalent to a teenager. And with any teenager, Binky loves attention, toys and, of course, the ever famous “head and ear scratch.” Unlike most teenagers, she is very neat with her litter box and keeps a clean kennel. Binky gets along with other cats and would be a great companion. Binky can be seen at Beaumont Animal Care, 1884 Pine St., Beaumont. Ask for No. 31865.
