The romantic comedy genre has been overdue for a makeover and in this fresh new take is just the ticket. Easily, it’s one of the most entertaining movies I’ve seen this summer as it carries a great storyline while allowing entry into a culture I knew virtually nothing about.

Think of a storyline as a branch, with elements of the story hung like ornaments from it. Then think of the brightest, most colorful ornaments and that is “Crazy Rich Asians,” from start to finish.

With the dove hunting opener fast approaching it’s time to get geared up with everything from a new hunting license to shotgun shells.

The new 2018-19 hunting and fishing licenses went on sale last week. Now is a good time to go ahead and renew. If you wait until the day before dove season opens you could be stuck standing in line for a good while. The most popular license is the Super Combo that includes both hunting and fishing and stamps. That way you’ve got everything on one piece of paper.

No, the name is not the newest dental disorder.  On the contrary Pericallis is one of the most vibrantly colored and long-lasting flowers around. I spotted this beauty in the plant area of a nearby box store last March and some of them went home with me.  They have recently called it a day because of the extreme heat but lasted for months with no problem.

Art box efforts across Beaumont are increasing artists’ reach and opportunities by exposing their artwork to a large audience, with passers-by honking, remarking and even hiring the artists laboring to beautify the city.

Soul food is a pillar of our southern culture from the Louisiana bayou to the coast of North Carolina. It is this aspect of the American identity that Jadalaya’s House of Soul brings to the community of Beaumont. Jadalaya’s House of Soul in Downtown Beaumont is a soul food restaurant dedicated to providing delicious southern cooking that tastes like it came right off the family dinner table.

Another season of dove hunting begins Saturday, Sept. 1. That’s when the North and Central Zones will open, and the regular season of the South Zone will open Friday, Sept. 14. One thing is certain: It’s not going to be much cooler then. With that in mind, you might want to start making short walks around the neighborhood to kind of get yourself in shape for hunting in steamy weather. Ditto that for your retriever.

If not for recent events, which demonstrate that we still have far to go to repair racial relations in this country, Spike Lee’s new movie would be more like a history lesson — and it is, only it seems we’ve haven’t learned much of anything in the last 40 years.

Set during the turbulent ‘70s, the movie begins with a fictitious race baiter (Alec Baldwin) starring in a black and white movie touting white supremacy, but the story moves quickly to Colorado Springs where the police department is trying to integrate its ranks.

Living in the professional newspaper world for many years gives me access to many good pieces of information. I get press releases every day, and sometimes every hour, from the big boys like UPI, AP and others, as well as many from smaller agencies and reporting firms. I have long been a member of several respected news associations including the National and International Associations of Investigative Journalists.
