By Kyle Swearingen

You enter the building greeted by 25-cent gumball machines and a sign that reads “If you like our food, tell your friends. If you don’t, tell us.” The warm environment surrounding you is peppered with patrons chatting, sharing stories and laughs. You just stepped into Diamond S Diner, a small country diner in the heart of China right off of Highway 90. The building that is now the eatery, first built in 1985, is now owned by Sandra Sherman, a 50th wedding anniversary present to her from her late husband, J.E. Sherman.

Here we go with the feel-good movie of the summer. It’s a sugary sequel to “Mamma Mia,” which managed to gross over $600 million world-wide in 2008. This second verse is poised to do it again with a lot of talent in front and behind the camera making it all come together for a definite chick flick pleaser.

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson stars in Skyscraper

‘Skyscraper’

Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Neve Campbell

Directed by: Rawson Marshall Thurber

Rated: PG-13

Ours is not to question why, but to just sit back and be entertained. As silly and preposterous as this new action film is, it is still highly entertaining, and that’s what summer movies are all about.

Writing recently about what our faces say about us led me to another topic. My daughter DeAnna, who works for an airline, has always been funny by nature. She could be a standup comedian if she wanted. Because of her personality and length of experience, she is often brought passengers with problems or questions and has diffused many serious situations. One I will never forget occurred at Jack Brooks Regional in Beaumont.

We Americans sure do love our entertainment. Summer is the season of blockbuster movies, concerts, and binge-watching our favorite television series. And what’s the harm in a little distraction, right?
