I’ve always thought that the fuchsia flower was one of the most beautiful things that gardeners could put into a hanging basket but then I learned that they have a history too. A most interesting English article at www.fuchsiaflower.co.uk opened my eyes to the background of this plant.

Baile folklórico dancers

Dancers at the Sour Lake Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Banquet perform baile folklórico, literally “folkloric dance” in Spanish. According to the book “Iconic Mexico: An Encyclopedia from Acapulco to Zócalo” by Eric Zolov, Amalia Hernandez pioneered baile folklorico in the 1950s with her establishment and leadership of the Ballet Folklorico Mexico. Additionally, she founded a school in Mexico City for the study and practice of classical and folkloric dance techniques.

Tito's Tacos' Tacos Plate

Texas — the home of the cowboy boot, Bluebell Ice Cream and, of course, the best tacos in the United States. Case in point: Tito’s Tacos of Beaumont.

Tito’s Tacos was born from the family of Norman and Ashley Pitman, who took the expertise and recipes of Norman’s family and brought them to Southeast Texas, while also adding their own flair to the family recipes.

The animated cast of Isle of Dogs, Wes Anderson's latest film

A few months ago, sitting through the trailer for this movie, I heard comments around me like “weird,” “interesting,” and, yes, it is kind of weird and interesting. After all it is a Wes Anderson movie so that’s to be expected.

This past weekend was one to forget if you had plans on being outdoors. With temperatures in the 40s and a gusting, cold and wet wind, it was the perfect weekend for watching the Masters golf tournament. But believe it or not, if the weather is not topsy-turvy, there’s some pretty good fishing to be had.

We Texans have a nationwide reputation, if not worldwide, for about bragging Texas. Unfortunately, there are some areas where our state leads that we do not, and should not, be bragging about. These areas need legislative and leadership intervention.

Texas leads in the number of low paid workers. While we boast about the spectacular growth, or the Texas miracle, mainly stemming from our oil industry, Texas still lags the nation in pay for people who live by the sweat of their brow.
