La Suprema, a local staple in Mid County, has been in one family for three generations.

It started as a tortilla bakery in the late ’60s selling to local grocery stores, and later branched out into tamales before becoming a small restaurant in 1970, owner Remi Bryan said. Her grandmother Amelia Martinez and two of her friends were the original owners.

Q. What are my rights if I have a common law marriage? If we get divorced, will I have the right to any property?

A. As I have said many times before, a common law marriage is no different than any other marriage. You are married. Whether you are married by a justice of the peace, a rabbi or priest, or have a common law marriage, the legal ramifications are the same.

One was surrendered to the shelter when his family lost everything during Hurricane Harvey, but he has so much love to give! One is not your usual Labrador retriever; he is calm and gentle in nature. One prefers sitting at your feet and enjoying your company, rather than chasing ducks or swimming. Don’t get us wrong — he is an active pupper who does enjoy a nice lap around the pool, and enjoys playing with his canine and human friends! A truly incredible dog, One has a giant heart full of love that he is waiting to give to a family. Could that family be yours?

Holly Berries

Just driving home from the grocery store with goodies for tonight’s dinner, I was thinking about just how brown all of the landscapes looked. Then I rounded the bend and spotted a large group of holly berry trees. What a happy surprise! These evergreen trees look good all year but especially cheer you up in February when they are chock full of red, red holly berries.

OK, so life hasn’t turned out exactly like you or I wanted it to, and we are somewhat sad. Our plans simply have not been on target, or we lost the partner or significant other that would help them to be fulfilled. Money is an issue, our health questionable and we just don’t understand that. Loved ones are far away from home. The car is old and is possibly on its last leg. The house needs painting. The insurance is due. We are having a baby perhaps too soon. There is addiction in the lives of loved family members.

James Holly, M.D.

Several years ago, as I stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., I recalled the haunting words of Dion Dimucci’s 1968 song eulogizing Abraham Lincoln, John and Bobby Kennedy, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This simple song stirs a mournful longing and lament for these fallen leaders. The words to “Abraham, Martin and John” have been resonating through my soul as we celebrate Black History Month:
