Golden Triangle Rose Show set for Saturday, April 30

It is that wonderful time of year again when we have blooms everywhere around us. Some of the most perfect blooms will be at the Golden Triangle Rose Society Annual Spring Rose Show. It will be held Saturday, April 30, at the Tyrrell Park Garden Center. The show is open to the public from noon – 3 p.m. and is free.

Members and non-members of the Golden Triangle Rose Society are invited to bring their “Perfect Rose” entry to the contest. Don’t be bashful! But if you feel a little intimidated, as I do, just come and enjoy the show. We are so fortunate because members of the GTRS will be on hand to answer any questions about roses. When should we prune? What should we fertilize with? What is the best rose for Southeast Texas?

The judges for the contest, fully accredited by the American Rose Society, come from Louisiana, Houston and around Texas to judge the entries in GTRS shows.  Many of the entrants make quite a drive to come here, too. The rosarians are not only a loyal group, but also knowledgeable. You can see some of their handywork at the Tyrrell Park Rose Garden. Take a minute and enjoy a walk in this area of the park. If it is sunny, there will be beautiful brides lining up to have their special photo taken in front of these roses. The fragrance alone is worth a trip out to Tyrrell Park.

If you are especially interested in growing roses or learning about them, you are invited to come to GTRS meetings. They are held the first Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Tyrrell Park Garden Center. Your attendance is welcome, and they would love for you to join the club. A long-standing GTRS Club tradition is to celebrate July 4 every year with a delicious potluck dinner. You don’t want to miss out on that!

Typically several hundred roses are entered and their “owners” begin setting up the beauties from 6-9 a.m. Look for the trophy table with winning roses and trophies on it. Beautiful roses are all over the place!

If you want to make an entry or have any questions call (409) 883-9888. Don’t forget to bring your cameras. The colors and aromas are out of this world.
