Editor:

I had to choke back tears when I read that because State Farm considered its customers “highest priority” it was dropping their homeowners coverage. All 11,000 of us who live on the Texas Gulf Coast.

My, oh my, I could feel State Farm’s acute pain: “These changes will help ensure we are there for all Texas insurers.” How many attorneys and PR specialists were needed to craft such a press release?

From what I’ve read, many treasured customers felt they should help State Farm in its stated struggle for “balance” by dropping their coverage on autos, boats, RVs — even their wives’ bling-bling.

That was my first reaction, too, then I thought about what this immense corporation with headquarters in Indiana was doing to its agents. It might require a search but I’ll be able to find someone to write policies on our home. But what about Mark Simon, our long-time agent — one of eight in Mid-County and Port Arthur? There certainly will be an adverse impact on their business. And on our entire community.

Give Mark a call. He might share how he’ll be affected, and what he plans to do to assist his clients.

Meanwhile, I’m waiting for the Texas Department of Insurance to announce it is going to take a long, hard look at State Farm.Sure.
