It has become painfully apparent to many of the governor supporters why Rick Perry did not choose to debate Mayor Bill White in his last governor’s race and that he was wise to not do so. Recent events in the presidential race indicate Perry is not a very good debater, does not think well on his feet, and embarrassing facts seem to emerge every time he makes such a high-profile appearance.

One of the most memorable phrases gleaned from the satirical comic strip Pogo was, “We have met the enemy and the enemy is us.” Unfortunately, today it seems too many Americans have taken the saying too seriously. From clips on TV and statements of leadership, particularly from the Tea Party group, it seems some Americans view our national government as a foreign power that somehow has invaded us. Those who incessantly attack our national government do major damage to our system.

What milestones do you use by which to judge your life’s highs and lows? In retrospect, do these events or encounters appear larger than life, or have you honestly ever taken the time to think about what makes your life worth living each day?

As a boy, our house was not blessed with air conditioning. Most of our neighbors’ homes were the same. Our families were mostly refinery working-hand dads and stay-at-home moms. Most of us have long since become immune to the pungent odors produced by the various industries surrounding Port Arthur. Some, however, did not.

With all of the weather related occurrences in our natural habitat in the last few months, folks are beginning to wonder if some of those old Bible prophecies might be more than just fodder for Sunday sermons by rambling old preachers of the gospel. Several dear friends of mine who have no more than a passing interest in religion, church or gathering with other believers have found the time to ask me what I think about them, and more importantly, what I think might be coming in our future.

In the past several weeks, we have discussed prayer and its many forms and trustfully, I hope we are exercising our duty and privilege to pray daily for ourselves, for others, our nation and our world.

Christians are called on in Scripture and from the pulpits and podiums of our land to be many different things as examples to the world. One of the most common and often used symbols for Christians in service is to be the light of the world. I don’t think anyone reading this column today would doubt that our world in many ways is in darkness.

As a lifelong Texas resident, I feel the need to write concerning the approval process of the Keystone XL Pipeline Project. As I am sure you are aware, this project is awaiting a Presidential Permit for the pipeline to cross the U.S./Canada border.

It is likely that nearly everyone remembers where they were 10 years ago when the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington D.C. were attacked by a terrorist group and where a group of brave passengers on Flight 93 made the decision to rush the cockpit – giving their lives – to save others.
