Hypocrisy of Gov. Rick Perry

In football, the term “H-back” is generally applied to a very athletic individual who is pretty much an all around utility player. He can occupy many positions and is usually considered one of the better players, not particularly at one position, but very useful at several.

Waters of worldly ways can dilute your faith’s flavor

Thoroughly enjoying teaching the adults at our church here on the Bolivar Peninsula in our Sunday school hour, we have recently delved into the subjects of salt and light. Common enough sounding topics, but so much information is contained therein that we have had long discussions, wonderful illustrations from real life, and many opportunities to ask questions and to offer opinions. This is what good, quality teaching is all about, in my opinion. It is not necessarily one “expert” standing and giving his or her opinion for hours on end.

Lessons of the past forgotten

Oscar Mauzy, former state senator and Supreme Court justice, had a large sign hanging on the wall of his senate office. It read, “Forgive and remember.” Unfortunately, too many voters have not adopted the part about remembering. It is my belief too many voters do not necessarily forgive — they simply forget.

Why Gov. Perry won’t run

It is always risky to make predictions. Even sports analysts, who are great prognosticators, are very reluctant to predict the winner of the Super Bowl or the World Series. Conventional wisdom says if you claim to be an expert in something and make a wrong prediction, it somehow diminishes your credibility. Nonetheless, here goes as far as our governor’s presidential ambitions.

Grandma’s hands

While riding down the highway the other day, I made an interesting discovery. Looking down into my lap, I noticed that my hands looked old. I was startled. I don’t feel old. My kids don’t think I act old. My friends think I dress fashionably enough … well, for playing on the beach, anyway.

Let’s hear it for the men of the home

June is always a busy month. School is out for the summer and great plans are being made to cram as much as absolutely possible into the few weeks between one grade and the next. Family vacations loom large and visits to grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins are on the horizon. For the many blended families that are living in America now, scheduling the time for mom or dad, according to court orders, has to be taken into prime consideration.

My country is showing through today

Funny, how one simple little ordinary thing can take you back in time so vividly. I had a time-travel experience today thanks to the gifts from a neighbor here on the beach.Ted came in the door last night with a second bag of homegrown tomatoes, some peppers and a beautiful onion pulled straight out of the garden of a neighbor across the street from us. This kind man had shared some of his fresh, homegrown vegetables last week and they were wonderful.
