Several junior high and high school students at Community Christian School participated in the annual ACSI Creative Writing Festival. Students first competed on the local school level, then advanced to the Regional level.
Lamar University will host a “Standing Ovation” – a celebration honoring LU President Jimmy Simmons and first lady Susan Simmons – on Saturday, March 2, at the Montagne Center in Beaumont. Simmons is stepping down after more than 14 years of service as president and 43 years with the university. Activities will begin with the Lady Cardinals’ basketball game at 4 p.m. and continue with the Cardinals’ men’s game at 6 p.m.
Sold out success … Madison’s on Dowlen was the place to be last Wednesday night, Sept. 12, for the fourth annual Ubi Caritas Date Auction as about 25 lovely young ladies and youthful gentleman took the stage before a crowd eager to do their bidding. Chairs Samantha Richards and Traci Coleman were thrilled at this year’s proceedings from both the silent and live auction.
A soaring evening … It was wheels up this past Friday evening as co-captains Michele and Mitchell Smith along with first lieutenant Lynn Castle orchestrated the Art Museum of Southeast Texas silver 25th anniversary gala “Come Fly With Us” honoring Beaumont-born artist Paul Manes.
Hopeful harvest … The 10th annual Harvest of Hope Gala benefiting Catholic Charities of Southeast Texas is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 8, at 6 p.m. at the MCMEleganté Hotel. Shelley and Joe Tortorice, founder of Jason’s Deli, will be honored for their service to numerous community and religious organizations.
A seasonal sensation … Once again, the Greater Beaumont Chamber of Commerce hosted the annual fundraiser Spice of the Season to raise money for Leadership Beaumont. This year’s soiree, Cartoonmania, was catered by Carrabba’s Italian restaurant with celebrity waiters dressed as their favorite cartoon characters. As they served guests appetizers, salads, a main course and dessert, they earned tips in Looney Loot.
Red, White and Wow! … Lamar University President James Simmons earned another elite honor with induction into the Phi Beta Mu Texas Bandmasters Hall of Fame at the latest Texas Bandmasters Association annual convention in San Antonio. In selecting Simmons to become part of the Hall of Fame 2012 class, the international bandmasters fraternity continues its tradition of honoring outstanding Texas band directors. Simmons was thrilled to observe that the honor puts him in the record books with his mentors and up for recognition by his peers.
Hope lives in the heart … On Thursday, Aug. 23, The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs of Beaumont will host its Hope for Tomorrow Luncheon and Style Show at the beautiful Tyrrell Park Botanical Garden Center.
Carnival of the Arts … A virtual delight for the senses, REcreate is a vibrant creative cultural event staged in historic downtown Beaumont that was first held last year, and by the looks of last Saturday night, doubled in size this year.
