Joe and Johnnie Broussard

Joe E. Broussard has been crowned the 69th King of the Neches River Festival.

King Joe was born and raised in Beaumont and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Forest Park High School in 1980, and the University of Notre Dame with a degree in accounting in 1984.

Kelly Dance Force

The Kelly Dance Force traveled to Los Angeles to perform at Disneyland in Anaheim on Jan. 12-16. KDF performed a 20-minute show featuring jazz, pom, ballet and lyrical routines on a Disneyland stage. Performances included competition and football routines as well small group performances.

If you have ever thought about growing fruit trees in your yard, you will be excited to learn of an upcoming workshop sponsored by Texas A&M Agri-Life Extension Office of Jefferson County. The Urban Fruit Tree Workshop: Growing Fruit on The Gulf Coast will be held Jan. 24. And we are in for a treat. Keynote speaker Tom Leroy comes to us very well suited to lead the program, along with our Local Citrus Expert Panel.

Several junior high and high school students at Community Christian School participated in the annual ACSI Creative Writing Festival. Students first competed on the local school level, then advanced to the Regional level.

LU President Jimmy Simmons and first lady Susan Simmons

Lamar University will host a “Standing Ovation” – a celebration honoring LU President Jimmy Simmons and first lady Susan Simmons – on Saturday, March 2, at the Montagne Center in Beaumont. Simmons is stepping down after more than 14 years of service as president and 43 years with the university. Activities will begin with the Lady Cardinals’ basketball game at 4 p.m. and continue with the Cardinals’ men’s game at 6 p.m.

Sold out success … Madison’s on Dowlen was the place to be last Wednesday night, Sept. 12, for the fourth annual Ubi Caritas Date Auction as about 25 lovely young ladies and youthful gentleman took the stage before a crowd eager to do their bidding. Chairs Samantha Richards and Traci Coleman were thrilled at this year’s proceedings from both the silent and live auction.

A soaring evening … It was wheels up this past Friday evening as co-captains Michele and Mitchell Smith along with first lieutenant Lynn Castle orchestrated the Art Museum of Southeast Texas silver 25th anniversary gala “Come Fly With Us” honoring Beaumont-born artist Paul Manes.

Hopeful harvest … The 10th annual Harvest of Hope Gala benefiting Catholic Charities of Southeast Texas is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 8, at 6 p.m. at the MCM Eleganté Hotel. Shelley and Joe Tortorice, founder of Jason’s Deli, will be honored for their service to numerous community and religious organizations.
