Independence Monday means a week off for some

Vacationville … Proprietors at the marvelous Mildred Building including the Book Bazaar, Caves Interiors, Katharine & Co. and One Vase will be closed beginning July 4 through July 8. Finders Fayre will close July 4 but remain open the rest of the week. Mark Lowe and Above All Photography are open by appointment only. The first week in August welcomes the next exciting First Thursday (actually Aug. 4) at the Mildred, so mark your calendars for all the wonderful wares that will be on sale that evening.

Gigantic gARTage sale … Just a friendly reminder that decorative donations are being accepted by the Art Museum of Southeast Texas (AMSET) as they prepare for the sensation of summer that will be held on Friday, July 15 (members pay $35/non-members $45) for the gARTage Sale and pre-sale dinner from 6 to 10 p.m. This unique shopping experience blends an art sale with a garage sale and barbecue dinner. A wide selection of art and home décor will be for sale at fantastic prices. On Saturday, July 16, from 7 to 11 a.m., the gARTage sale will be free and open to the general public. See you there!

Short-timer celebration … Those near and dear to yours truly gathered at the home of Ellen and Will Ohmstede in Houston to wish me well on my retirement from LaPorte Independent School District (and you thought all I did was go to parties!). Guests dined on Tex-Mex straight from the Sylvia’s Enchilada Kitchen taco truck and sipped icy margaritas. Also sharing hosting duties were Karen and Kevin Henry, Sheila and Jerry Reese, Paige and Morris Windham, Brian White and Tanya Niblett, and Gerald and Jessica Farha. I was overwhelmed by the attendance and kind words from my closest including Melissa and Martin Edwards, Cindy and Jim Thorpe, Gena Sylvester, Charles Lea, Barbara and Bob Quinn, Lou and Johnny Huber, Jeff McManus, James Mathews, Margie and Rocky Chase, Marc McDonald, Vic Reyna, Marilyn and Tom Bell, Melanie Dishman, Nicole Fertitta, Lexie and Aaron Boudreaux, and my favorite cousin, Linda, and hubby her Buddy Ohmstede, who flew in from Baton Rouge just to be there. With friends like these, my future is bright!

Looking forward … So many are thrilled that the renowned Cirque de Soleil will perform at Ford Park in November. More information to follow.

Candles and cakes… Birthday wishes to JoBeth Jenkins, Ric Arena, Scootie Clark, Ronna Phelps, John Steinman, Suzanne Birdwell and Stephanie Parma.

Until the next RSVP!
