Although most deer hunters abide by the rules of fair chase, there are always a few outlaws that can’t play by the rules. A good example is what recently happened in East Texas.

Duck and goose hunters risk misery on any given day, but there are times when we know better than to go but still choose to roll the dice in an effort to scratch out one more memorable hunt.

That was the case this past Saturday, Jan. 2, when Old Man Winter tossed us some of the worst weather we’ve seen so far this season. It rained all day. The temperature was in the low 40s, and unfortunately, I had agreed to join a few buddies on a combo goose/duck hunt on a flooded field and marsh.

It took a while, but old man winter is finally here, and just in time for deer hunters to get in on the movement of bucks that are just now beginning to come to feeders. If you’re lucky enough to have a South Texas lease, bucks are definitely in the rut, and now is when some of the highest scoring racks will be tagged.

So far, the second split of duck season has been much better than what we had during the first few weeks of November. Good numbers of gadwall, teal and pintails are being seen by hunters in flooded fields and in the marsh and backwater estuary lakes along the coast.

Phil Brannan harvested this solid 8-pointer last week while hunting in the Hill

We’re well into the deer season at this point and, as predicted by wildlife biologists, there are some very nice bucks being tagged. Some of the best are from South Texas, but I’ve seen a couple of big bucks from the Hill Country that have better-than-average antlers. And as of last week, some of those Hill Country bucks were in the rut.

Deer hunting across much of Texas is better than expected with some pretty decent bucks being tagged, and the does that I’ve seen while deer hunting in East Texas and the Hill Country are in great shape. Also, we’re beginning to see more ducks settling into the Southeast Texas marsh and along the middle Texas coast.

Opening weekend of deer season and the north zone opener on ducks was on the soggy side, but at least we got our first good cold front that should set the stage for excellent deer hunting this week.

A whole lot of wind and rain has brought a flood of water to East and Southeast Texas that will likely slow the fishing down on Sabine Lake and East Galveston Bay. But Sam Rayburn guide Bill Fondren says the crappie and bass fishing there is still pretty darned good.
