If you’re looking for a way to work off excess holiday calories, aerial yoga might be your thing.

Jillian Fertig started teaching classes at Ternion Athletics in Nederland for those who’ve always wanted to cross Cirque du Soleil stardom off their bucketlist.

Fertig herself only started taking classes at an aerial gym in El Paso about two years ago.

“I had never done it before in my life,” she said. “It’s a different way to build strength.”

Those who really want to make good on their annual New Year’s resolutions of getting healthy can start by participating in the free Resolution Run/Walk 5K on Monday, Jan. 1, 9:30 a.m. hosted by the Sea Rim Striders at the Gulf Terrace Hike and Bike Trail near West Brook High School in Beaumont. No registration is required, so bring your friends and start 2018 out with the Sea Rim Striders. The goal of the Sea Rim Striders is to promote running and walking at all levels, from top-flight marathoners to those just beginning.

Babies, babies, and more babies! This June saw a massive baby boom throughout the Houston Zoo, with the biggest baby yet to come when later this summer, the zoo will welcome a 250-300-pound Asian elephant calf.

A California sea lion pup was born to first-time mother, Cali, on June 26 after a three-hour labor. The pup and Cali began to bond immediately, and nursing was spotted within hours. The sex of the pup has not yet been determined, and the mother and pup will spend a while behind the scenes strengthening their bond before they are ready to make their first public appearance.

Butterfly Release

The Harbor Foundation will host its eighth annual Butterfly Release on Saturday, April 29, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Ford Park in Beaumont. Admission to the event is free.

The entire community is invited, said Brenna Rodriguez, regional director of Business Development at Harbor Healthcare System.

“The event last year just brought out huge crowds of families,” Rodriguez said. “Due to that, we wanted a facility that would accommodate a larger crowd and participation of people that wanted to come out and get involved and be a part of this event.”
