Galveston Island is full of rich history. Spanish explorer Jose de Evia named it in honor of Bernardo de Galvez y Madrid, Count of Galvez, in 1785. Pirate Jean Lafitte called the island his home until 1821 when forced out by the U.S. Navy.

The Beaumont Rotary Club will host John Malcolm Bales, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas, as the guest speaker at the organization’s monthly meeting on Wednesday, July 14. Rotarians and their guests will join Bales in the grand ballroom at the Elegante Hotel as he discusses “Bridging the Gap Between Law Enforcement and the Communities it Serves” over lunch.

UPDATE July 9, 2015: Texas game wardens have completed their investigation into an alligator attack that resulted in the death of Tommie Woodard, 28, and investigators concluded the unprecedented circumstances of the case, believed to be the first fatal alligator attack in Texas on record, warrant no further action.
