Billie Tate makes a purchase from Connie Dickinson, volunteer at Calder Woods

Connie Dickinson, a lovely Calder Woods resident, defies all we think we know about aging. To put it mildly, this woman is simply amazing. Connie has a Texas-sized heart for others and demonstrates it in her many volunteer efforts, and she says she has no plans for slowing down any time soon. She will celebrate her 100th birthday on Oct. 18.

Downtown Beaumont Junk Days returns this month on Saturday, March 5. Hosted by BAW Resale/Interiors at 660 Fannin St., junk dealers and vendors of all sorts sell their wares up and down Fannin from 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. There’s food, live music, and more cool junk and antiques than you can shake a stick at.

Does anybody just sell gas anymore? It doesn’t seem so. And it’s understandable, with the industry so competitive, prices so volatile and profit margins so narrow. So now your Exxon station is also a Subway, and your Shell is also a McDonald’s. But you can go to McDonald’s or Subway anywhere. But where can you get good barbecue while gassing up? Lots of places, maybe, but one comes to mind right off: J&R Market at the Valero station in Sour Lake.

A 24-year-old Mexico native was sentenced to prison in Jefferson County Feb. 29 for the murder of 25-year-old Port Arthur resident Denzel Washington. Jose Julio Esquivel was sentenced to 40 years for Washington’s murder, 20 years for a separate aggravated assault and 20 years for burglary of a habitation to run concurrently.
