It’s time to start pulling out the funky hats, the feather boas, the “special occasion” koozies and the boogie shoes — Mardi Gras has landed, which means one thing.

It’s party time.

This year, Southeast Texas Mardi Gras returns Thursday, March 3, through Sunday, March 6, and by the looks of the festival lineup, organizers are planning to make this year’s event one for the record books.

After Pinehurst city leaders unanimously decided to suspend Fire Chief Grady Gray on Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2010, from his duties in the volunteer fire department and as the city’s code enforcement officer, both posts were in need of staffing. It wasn’t until this month, however, that those positions were filled.

The Beaumont Police Department Training Room was filled with officers, media reps and well-wishers as 25-year veteran Beaumont police officer Kenneth Karr accepted a promotion to sergeant during a ceremony held in his honor Feb. 23.A montage of photos from Karr’s days on the force welcomed in guests, and the man of the hour regaled the group with stories of his years with the department and his lofty ambitions for this new post.

Beaumont police have arrested Keith Allen Fowler in connection with a burglary that took place Tuesday, Feb. 22, in the 2800 block of South Sixth Street.

According to police, Fowler and another individual allegedly burglarized a residence and later tried to sell the stolen property back to the owner. The owner set up a meeting with the two alleged thieves at the car wash on Sixth Street, but the pair got spooked and fled in a silver Cadillac.

A dissenting group of Southeast Texas Tea Party Patriot members have taken their displeasure with the direction of the local movement headed by President Ralph McBride to the courtroom by filing a lawsuit against McBride for his handling of the group’s finances and how the group is currently constituted.
