For years, Beaumont seniors and the City Council have advocated for a new activity center to replace the aging Best Years Center, and in 2016, the council approved its construction downtown near the Event Centre. The new facility, dubbed “The Lakeside Center” by council, is opening soon and will offer the same services as Best Years provides, enriching lives by giving its members a variety of programs in which to participate.

During a special presentation at the Beaumont City Council meeting March 6, Mayor Becky Ames crowned Melissa Cornwell as Mrs. Beaumont. Cornwell will go on to compete in the Mrs. Texas pageant in May.

Mayor Ames said, “As our Mrs. Beaumont title-holder, Melissa is available to assist you in upcoming fundraising events, activities and public service campaigns.”

Street after street, block after block, Southeast Texas neighborhoods are being inundated by bustling businesses drawing clientele into “legal” gambling dens crammed full of electronic gaming devices commonly referred to as “eight-liners.” These same neighborhoods are also being inundated by an influx of unreported cash money, violent crime, drugs and the unsavory characters that accompany such elements, according to police and municipal officials.

A Lumberton Middle School student was arrested March 8 for sending a threatening message regarding the school, Lumberton Independent School District Assistant Superintendent Gerald Chandler announced in a news release the same day. 

According to Chandler, the student was detained within a few minutes of the message neing received. No student was harmed, and the campus did not have to engage in a lockdown.

Unveiling of Honorees

Pioneering Women unveiled its 2018 honorees Wednesday March 6. The honorees included Ava Graves, Aggie In, Verlie Nobles, Norma Sampson and Robin Mouton. Each year Pioneering Women, a nonprofit organization that honors women in the community and celebrates the 19th amendment, picks a handful of women as its yearly honorees.
