Kelli Creel’s passionate interests in microbiology and dentistry have led her from the classrooms and labs of Lamar University in Beaumont to boats on the Sabine Lake, dentists’ offices in the area, expeditions in Belize, and now, the United Kingdom.

As Beaumonters were prepping for Super Bowl 50 between the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers, around 25 Lamar University social work students teamed up with the Southeast Texas Food Bank and H-E-B to tackle hunger.

Thursday, Feb. 4, representatives from Lamar University’s Social Work Student Association participated in the Souper Bowl of Caring food drive at the H-E-B store on College Street in Beaumont benefiting Southeast Texas families.

Crime Stoppers is asking for the public’s assistance in getting dangerous drug dealers and drug users, along with the poisonous products they carry, off the streets. To that end, The Examiner will periodically feature a list of five persons accused of drug-related crimes here in High Five.

“Crime Stoppers and The Examiner are teaming up to fight the drug problem in Southeast Texas,” Beaumont Police Officer Carol Riley of Crime Stoppers said.

ExxonMobil Beaumont Refinery experienced an unplanned shutdown of one of its sulfur units Wednesday morning around 11 a.m., Feb. 10, and as a precautionary measure enacted a shelter-in-place order within the complex.

A similar move was made at nearby Jefferson County Courthouse, according to Greg Fountain, Emergency Management coordinator for Jefferson County.
