Jefferson County Commissioners approved $35,914 in emergency Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) grant funding to replace bulbs and ballasts at the Ford Park baseball fields at a meeting of the court Monday, Aug. 18.

Local pastor James Arthur McAbee, known as “the Pistol Packing Preacher,” faced judgment Aug. 20, not the preacher’s final judgment in the eyes of the Lord but judgment by a Jefferson County criminal court on marijuana charges stemming from an April incident in which officers reportedly discovered him with drugs and a gun.

A police officer is assaulted every nine minutes in the United States, and on average, 53 are murdered each year.

These disturbing statistics, cited in the Tactical Edge magazine article “Learning from tragedy: Preventing officer deaths with medical interventions,” remind how important it is for law enforcement to not only receive the proper training for medical emergencies, but also to have the proper live-saving equipment needed to deal with such dire situations.

The Big Thicket Association is celebrating its 50th anniversary by hosting the first annual Neches River Rally on Saturday, Sept. 6. The rally will begin and end at the Lower Neches Valley Association Saltwater Barrier boat launch at the end of Bigner Street in Beaumont.

American Red Cross announced Monday, August 18 that Chester R. Jourdan, Jr. has been selected as the new executive director of the Beaumont and Orange County Chapters.  Jourdan assumed his new responsibilities on Monday.
