Police arrested a Vidor man Aug. 14 after he reportedly struck a vehicle from behind, bolted from the scene of the accident and then assaulted a responding officer who followed a trail of car parts to find the fleeing suspect.

According to a report from the Vidor Police Department, a caller reported that while stopped at the intersection of Old Highway 90 East and the I-10 service road in his Ford F-150, a silver Nissan Versa struck his vehicle from behind and kept driving.

Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath announced Friday, Aug. 11, the appointment of two new members to the Beaumont Independent School District (BISD) Board of Managers. The seven-member board was reduced by the resignation of Dr. Jimmy Simmons, Lenny Caballero and Jack Carroll last month.

While the district as a whole “met standard,” multiple Beaumont ISD campuses were rated as “improvement required” in the 2017 accountability reports released Tuesday, Aug. 15.Smith, MLK and South Park middle schools all require improvement. Vincent, Odom, and Marshall middle schools met standard.Caldwood, Pietzch-MacArthur, Blanchette, Martin, Jones-Clark, Charlton Pollard and Fehl elementary schools are all rated improvement required. Curtis, Fletcher, Guess, Amelia, Regina, Homer and Dishman elementary schools met standard.

She was a pioneer at the Beaumont Police Department, the first woman police officer to make the force. She spearheaded the genesis of what would become the Special Crimes Unit at BPD, headed the ID Department, oversaw personnel, and spent decades in a role traditionally off-limits to the fairer sex – serving as a “she-ro” and role model for little girls who wanted to pursue the same.

Still, according to Ella “Faye” Ford Woodsmall, she never intended to make history – she just wanted to be able to support herself and her two young daughters.
