The Lamar University Office of Alumni Affairs has named four alumni as Distinguished Alumni for 2017, noting that their dedication to their professions, service to their communities and loyalty to their alma mater epitomizes the Lamar University spirit, officials said.

Evolution Academy hosted an event to spotlight the benefit of alt education.

Jefferson County Commissioners and County Judge Jeff Branick issued a proclamation declaring the week of Jan. 22-28 to be School Choice Week because, according to the supporting document declaring the special designation, “all children in Jefferson County should have access to the highest-quality education possible.” 

The elected leaders believe the topic needs to be discussed in an effort to “raise awareness of the need for effective educational options.”

The organist at Temple Emanuel did not see anything suspicious on the afternoon of Jan. 20, but when the vocalist came back shortly afterward, there was a broken window in the stairwell leading down to the sanctuary, Temple President Allison Nathan Getz explained.

This is the fourth time that Temple Emanuel has been subject to vandalism in two months, Getz said.
