Jefferson County prosecutor gears up for capital murder trial in Galveston

 

The trial of Jefferson County Courthouse shooter Bartholomew Granger was pushed back to April 2 of next year in light of the capital murder indictment last week by a grand jury, and veteran prosecutor Ed Shettle said the death penalty will be on the table.


The trial was slated to begin on Aug. 20.

Beaumont mosquitos positive for West Nile

It’s been more than a month since two batches of mosquitoes from Port Arthur tested positive for the West Nile Virus, and now the problem has buzzed its way into Beaumont, according to Kevin Sexton, director of Jefferson County Mosquito Control.

“They were collected on July 31, and we received information yesterday (Aug. 8) that the pool had tested positive,” Sexton said. “It was at Park and Saxe avenues in the South Park area in Beaumont.”

Ordinance makes parking easier for those with disabilities

Parking in downtown Beaumont can be a trying experience during popular events that draw big crowds, but for people with disabilities, that frustration is doubled. The city of Beaumont has some measures in place to reduce the levels of anxiety for its residents and visitors with disabilities.

Earlier this summer, the city specifically addressed handicapped parking in downtown Beaumont, public works director Patrick Donart said.

$69,000 Entergy grant

Lamar University engineering research puts focus on efficiency

Xianchang Li, associate professor of mechanical engineering at Lamar University, will undertake groundbreaking work in modeling complex power generation systems with an eye to increasing efficiency thanks to a $69,000 grant from Entergy Charitable Foundation.
