It seems like everyone is taking time to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the events of Sept. 11, 2001. Among those was a special effort put out by Lamar University's Student Government Association whose members took time to place nearly 3,000 flags in the quad of the university.

City of Orange police have released the name of man investigators believe to be the shooter in an incident that occurred over the holiday on Monday, Sept. 5.

According to Orange Police Department Capt. Cliff Hargrave, officers were dispatched to 1411 Simmons Dr., the Old School Lounge, shortly before 2 a.m. Sept. 5 in reference to a shooting.

The 2011 Lamar football campaign got off to a wet start, but not because of anything the Cardinals did on the field, but Mother Nature continued her dominance, like the Cardinals exerted theirs over a clearly overmatched Texas College team, 58-0 Saturday night in a soaked Provost-Umphrey Stadium.

DePauldrick Garrett set a school record with four rushing touchdowns and the defense has returned two interceptions for touchdowns as Lamar is starting off the 2011 campaign strong over NAIA foe Texas College, 58-0 after three quarters.

After waiting until the last game of the season last year to score a rushing touchdown, the Lamar Cardinals have addressed that problem and then some in their season opener against Texas College, scoring three rushing touchdowns in the first quarter as Lamar is taking care of the Steers 21-0.

DePauldrick Garrett leads the way with nine carries for 68 yards and two touchdowns, including the first touchdown of the season, a one yard gallop over the left side.
