Unemployment rate ticks up slightly to 7 percent

 

Texas added 12,900 jobs in June, with the unemployment rate increasing by a tenth of a point to 7 percent, according to figures released by the Texas Workforce Commission. Despite the increase, the state’s unemployment rate remains more than a point below the 8.2 percent national jobless rate.

Beaumont man gets automatic life sentence as repeat sex offender

Leon Phillips

Leon Phillips, 41, last known to reside at 2435 Beech St. in Beaumont, was sentenced Wednesday, Aug. 8, to life in the state penitentiary in connection with a 2010 aggravated sexual assault of a child. The sentence was automatic upon conviction because of the fact that Phillips been previously convicted of aggravated sexual assault in 1990 and sexual assault in 2000.
