Several local groups gathered in the summer twilight outside Orange City Hall on Sunday, Aug. 13.

Shelby Smith, who kickstarted the Golden Triangle Indivisible group with the women’s march back in January, explained that the candlelight service commemorated “those who have died at the hands of racism” and also demanded justice for victims of hate after the events in Charlottesville, Virginia, where counterprotesters clashed with white nationalists and other right-wing groups Saturday, Aug. 12.


The Vidor Lions Club is taking applications for veteran names to be engraved on the upright military granite stones at the Veteran’s Park “Fields of Freedom” through Sept. 15, and is offering the public other opportunities to honor beloved veterans at the park, Joanne Ledger says.


A new look at Calder Woods retirement community is taking shape as construction crews hope to have the indoor, heated pool ready by the end of the year.

The new pool will be 48 by 32 feet with a depth of 3 feet, 6 inches in the shallow end and 4 feet, 6 inches in the deepest end. It will hold 45,000 gallons and include a walk-down ramp and stairs, plus a lift for emergencies. Residents and guests will also have access to a jacuzzi.

It’s all part of a $25.9 million expansion project to the campus.

Jose Carmen Perez spoke to the Beaumont City Council on Aug. 15, expressing his concerns about recent violence in the city and describing a brutal attack on his 18-year-old grandson, who was reportedly one of the two parties assaulted and robbed during a carjacking at Westgate Baptist Church on Aug. 1.

The Examiner reported on the incident at the church last week. According to police, officers responded to the church at 6220 Westgate Drive, near Dowlen Road in Beaumont, after a neighborhood resident called and reported a young couple was at the door in distress.


The Sabine Oaks Board of Directors donated $490,000 to four area nonprofits after receiving funds from the 2014 sale of the Sabine Oaks Assisted Living Home to Serenity Assisted Care Living, LLC.
