UPDATE: As of 1:30 p.m., officials have announced Hwy. 73 east and west bound lanes have reopened after this morning's pile-up. The total number of vehicles and victims involved in the crash is still undetermined, but reports estimate up to 200 vehicles were affected with more than 50 persons reporting injuries. At least four people were critically injured in the major traffic incident, but no fatalities have been reported.

Beaumont police officers and fire department personnel responded to an accident along Eastex Freeway just past Austin Middle School Wednesday afternoon after a man driving a 1999 Pontiac lost control of his vehicle, went over the grassy median, across the access road slamming into an oak tree and then through a brick wall at the Longfellow Apartments.

The West End Little League (W.E.L.L.) will be registering players for the spring baseball season Jan. 7 and 14 at the Regina Howell Elementary cafeteria from 9 a.m. through 1 p.m. The league will be accepting players who are as young as 4 years old as of May 1, 2012 to the t-ball program. Players are accepted as old as 12 as of May 1, 2012 to the baseball program.

Never before in the history of Texas had a school district been made to change from seven single-member districts to five single-member districts with two at-large seats as a result of a forced election brought about by the citizenry petitioning the move.

From the outset, Beaumont Independent School District leadership has rallied against any change – forcing voters to gather signatures on a petition to get the measure on the ballot for consideration.
