What does it mean to be a Boy Scout? Is it merely rules, merit badges and campfire songs, or is it more? Daniel Carter Beard, one of the first national scout commissioners of the Boy Scouts of America, once said, “We must depend upon the Boy Scout movement to produce the men of the future.”

But before boys can truly become men through the Scouts, they have to prove themselves worthy of the title of Eagle Scout, the highest obtainable rank in scouting. Since its introduction in 1911, more than 2 million young men have earned the Eagle Scout rank.

The Lamar University softball team teamed with the softball team from Lamar State College-Port Arthur to raise $7,400 for the American Cancer Society.

The teams opened the day with a softball game that saw the Lady Cardinals claim a 5-0 victory. That was followed by a 5K run in the evening in which more than 200 runners participated.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Randall L. Fluke and Christopher T. Tortorice secured a nearly 20 year prison sentence for Ronald Seabridge Sr., the 60-year-old owner of Lumberton’s Brass Dragon Karate, who was found guilty by a jury Feb. 27, 2014, of receiving, distributing and possessing child pornography.

U.S. Attorney John M. Bales announced Tuesday, Oct. 28, that Assistant U.S. Attorneys in the Eastern District of Texas have been appointed as District Election Officers (DEOs) for the upcoming Nov. 4, 2014 general election.  The DEOs will be responsible for overseeing the District’s handling of complaints of election fraud and voting rights abuses in consultation with Justice Department Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Police in Groves are continuing to investigate the shooting deaths of a couple found inside their home on Thursday, Oct. 23. While the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing, police are already saying it appears as if no "foul play" was evident, leaving the public with questions regarding just how and why the couple's lives ended.
