The Bridge City Police Department (BCPD), working with the Orange County Sheriff's Office marine division, recovered the body of Darren Wynn Burge, 53, of Bridge City, on Thursday, Jan. 10. 

According to BCPD, a missing person report was filed on Jan. 6 with the police department. Burge had not been seen sincce Jan. 2 between the hours of 10:30 p.m. and 11 p.m.

On Thursday, Jan. 10, Lumberton Independent School District received a bomb threat made to the elementary school. Law enforcement believed the incident may have been related to suspects on the run in south end of the district that were responsible for burglarizing the AT&T store on Dowlen Road in Beaumont. The vehicle carrying the suspects lost control and went into the median in south Lumberton in the early hours of Jan. 10, which resulted in the suspects fleeing into a nearby wooded area.

Around 8:15 p.m. on Jan. 10, Beaumont police officers responded to 7-Eleven on Calder Avenue in reference to an aggravated robbery. Witnesses reported that three black males armed with handguns entered the store and robbed the clerk of money and tobacco products. 

They then fled the area on foot to a black extended cab truck waiting for them behind Tia Juanitas. The suspect vehicle was last seen heading eastbound on Laurel Street.

Orange County Judge Dean Crooks announced the final payment of a loan taken out to pad county coffers for the last months of 2018. The loan was originally anticipated to be $8 million.

During a Jan. 10 Vidor City Council meeting, councilmembers unanimously voted to appoint Kimberly Stiebig as mayor of the city of Vidor. 

The position had been left vacant as of Jan. 1, when former Mayor Robert Viator Jr. was sworn in as Orange County Commissioner Pct. 4.
